What I liked most about Journey Deck is that each question has the potential to take participants down a very deep road of reflection and openness, which guys sometimes shy away from. But something about being on playing cards, how they are designed, the simplicity, the masculinity, it all seemed non-threatening and actually quite normal, if not a little bit exclusive and luxurious. The Journey Deck brought a leveling sense, too where we all had a card, it was ours to overcome if you will, but then every card stirred something else. You could just feel the room getting heavy then light, heavy then light. I found myself as the group went on less dreading being open and vulnerable and really actually excited to hear the next question. The cards created a sense of empathy and anticipation that was refreshing and helpful in the space. I will use again and again and again.

I never thought a question about sandwiches could spark a conversation about my dad, but it did. I’ve been ordering the same sandwich every month for ages, ever since I grew up on Long Island. When I moved to LA, I realized just how much I missed that sandwich—and my dad, who was the one who introduced me to it. It’s funny how these seemingly simple questions can be so layered and fun to discuss with both old and new friends. Now, I take the deck with me wherever I go. It helps me meet new people and gives us something fun to talk about, which has been a bit of a challenge lately.

I was working remotely after cross-country relocation with my newborn and family, only to find out my mother was diagnosed with cancer. I felt alone on my journey and had nowhere to go.
